Our Story

Seven years ago while in San Diego for a conference, Debi Bailey-Brown, picked up the local magazine about San Diego in my hotel room.  The first article was about the San Diego Homeless Choir.  The article said that the founder, Steph Johnson, was overwhelmed with the number of homeless people in her neighborhood.  What could she do?  She decided to start a homeless choir, she was a singer/songwriter/recording artist with her own band.  They found a church that would let them practice there and feed them lunch.  Over time, she rented a building to raise funds and perform for the holiday season, and the event sold out.  The person writing the article said there was not a dry eye in the building. From that time on, Debi dreamed of starting a street choir in Redding that brings together the community to experience the healing power of music together.

Hope Street Choir was started to bring together our unsheltered neighbors with the community so all reconnect with hope and possibility through the healing power of music. It meets weekly at the Shasta County Arts Council on Fridays 10:00am-1:00pm. There is connection time, breakfast and then practice of our vocals for performances we have coming up.  We practice every week and then perform for various events around our city: Black History events, MLK events, senior events, care facilities, 4th of July, celebrations, school field trips that visit us and more. We will perform at the Garden of Lights for the fourth time this year; it gives each one of our members the opportunity to tour the event and is the highlight of all of our holiday season as many have never celebrated the holidays. We enrich our community as we come alongside them and help them overcome hurdles in their lives, such as, childhood trauma, challenges and addiction.
